Background & Experience

Stephen H. Hennessy is a litigator and trial lawyer in Boulder. He represents clients in civil actions involving money, property, insurance, civil rights, and deceptive trade practices.

Stephen started his career as a litigation associate at a leading commercial law firm in Denver. There, he defended the interests of financial institutions against contract, tort, and consumer protection claims. In that time, he refined his skills as a commercial litigator and developed a calculated and aggressive approach to dispute resolution.

Our economic system is designed to empower private corporations that operate for profit. But with such power follows distinct legal obligations. Legislatures have enacted powerful civil rights and consumer protection laws. But the practical disparity between corporations and consumers means those laws often go unenforced.

In 2021, Stephen left big law to start his practice in Boulder. After the Marshall Fire ravaged his community, he helped survivors overcome obstacles manufactured by powerful insurance companies. Through Boulder’s eviction defense project, he deterred deceptive trade practices promoted by corporate landlords. In doing so, he developed a passion for picking good fights against powerful adversaries.

Stephen leverages experience litigating claims involving breach of contract, bad faith, unreasonable delay or denial of insurance benefits, deceptive trade practices, civil rights violations, retaliation, employment discrimination, whistleblower violations, civil theft, and fraud. He delivers a client-centric and outcome-driven approach, often taking cases on a contingent fee basis.

Education

Stephen earned his Bachelor of Arts, Magna Cum Laude from The George Washington University. He earned his Juris Doctor, Order of the Coif from the University of Colorado Law School.

Stephen is authorized to appear in all courts of record of the State of Colorado, as well as the United States District Court for the District of Colorado and United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
